Tips for Donating

Studies show that donating to charity is good for the brain! It’s true -- researchers have found that donating money to charity activates regions of the brain associated with pleasure. But this isn’t all about you! The primary reason you should give is because your tax-deductible donation will assist in providing critical support and services to the families in your communities who really need a helping hand.

Of course, where you choose to make a donation is up to you. However, Families First hopes you will consider making a donation to Georgia’s largest and leading non-profit family service agency. When you invest in Families First, you invest in:

  • Cost-effective programs that make a positive difference for over 40,000 Georgia families and communities.
  • A highly trained staff skilled in helping troubled families transform their future.
  • More than a century of experience creating solutions that improve child well-being, adult self-sufficiency and parenting skills.
Tips for Volunteering

Did you know that those who engage in volunteer activities are less likely to suffer from ill health later in life and may be introduced into a positive reinforcing cycle of good health and future volunteering? Aside from health benefits, there are many reasons why you should volunteer: to help others; to make a difference; to connect with your community; to use your skills in a productive way or to develop new skills; to make new friends; to be challenged; to have fun; or to find purpose in your life.

The volunteer opportunities are endless. If you’re considering becoming a volunteer, the most important thing is to find something that you're absolutely passionate about or something that inspires you, and then find a need in your community that will enable you to harness the passion and inspiration within! And remember – every non-profit organization within your community always has a need for volunteers.

If there is a charity you are passionate about, contact that organization today and find out if it can meet your needs and objectives.

An in-kind contribution is a contribution that is made of non-cash donations, and that has a cash value. Donations of services, time or space for functions are all examples of in-kind contributions.

How do you make an in-kind donation? First, determine what organization you would like to help. Charities, non profit organizations, churches and schools are some examples. Choosing an organization that you enjoy or one that you know needs help is the most beneficial way to go. Find out from the organization what they may need. If you are an attorney, for example, donating your legal services to the organization is a service that a monetary value can be placed on (your hourly charges.). In addition, consider what contributions you may have that can be donated. Loaning funds without interest charges, providing space in your building for group meetings or donating supplies for an organization.

Whatever you decide to donate, be sure the organization provides you with a receipt for the services or items you are donating. This should include the date of the donation, a description of the item or service donated, the organization's name and the estimated value of donated services. Document all in-kind contributions as expenditures. They should be recorded as both a revenue and an expense on your general ledger and on your financial reports.

Do you know someone who needs support in some way, or who is grappling with an issue that they’re just not able to get their arms around? In many cases, people who struggle with problems involving mental and physical health, finances, housing, abuse, etc. just don’t know where to turn for help. By connecting someone to the right service at the right time, your resolution can make a world of difference to not only that person, but to his/her family, friends and community.

Connecting those who are in need of support with the appropriate services is a compassionate resolution that takes courage, but it may help to forever change the life of a child or family.

The past year has been difficult for many – the economy, job layoffs, personal finances, increased stress over what tomorrow will bring, just to name a few. These conditions can be detrimental to a person’s health and overall well-being. Knowing when a problem exists for an individual is important, but doing something about that problem is just as crucial.

If you need help, you can resolve to seek out and get the support you need. It takes strength and courage to admit you need help. It may not be easy, but if you have a problem that’s affecting your personal health, safety, or those around you, admit it as soon as possible. If you act promptly, there is usually time to correct the situation, and get your life back on track so that you can move forward and succeed – for your sake, for your family’s sake and for your community’s sake.
